Aromatherapy Essential Oils for Relaxation

Using aromatherapy for relaxation is only one way to benefit from the properties of these precious essential oils. For example, if you want a relaxing bath or shower, you may be interested in using basil, chamomile, linden, petitgrain, and Valerian. If you want an energizing bath, you may want to try rosemary, witch hazel, gentian, pine, and mint, which can also help tone your skin.

Here are a few aromatherapy relaxation techniques in which you can use the essential oil of your choice:

  • Aromatherapy Compress. Fill a large bowl with warm or cool water. Add about 3 drops of essential oil and mix well. Dip a face cloth in the bowl and wring out. Apply to your skin.

  • Body Lotion. You can take unscented body lotion and give it aromatherapy properties by adding approximately 4 drops of essential oil per ounce. Mix the lotion with a stir stick to ensure the oil is fully blended. To ensure the oils retain their properties and don’t evaporate, use the lotion within 30 days.   • Body Mist. Fill a spray bottle with distilled water and add about 10 drops of essential oil. Shake well before spraying. Avoid oils that can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Always research the properties of the oil you want to use beforehand.
  • Diffusers. Diffusers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are electrical, some use candles, etc. They are perfect for spreading the aroma of your essential oil throughout a room. Learn more about aromatherapy diffusers here.
  • Drawers and Closets. Dab a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball or on a tissue and place them in a drawer or in your closet. Replace as the scent evaporates.
  • Hair Brush. If you use a hairbrush with natural hair bristles, rub 3 drops of essential oil into your palm and wipe them onto the bristles. Use your hairbrush to brush your hair immediately. Note that some essential oils can’t be applied to the skin directly. Research your oil beforehand.

  • Hand Soap. You can create your own hand soap by purchasing unscented soap and adding essential oil to it. Add approximately 4 drops per ounce of soap. Mix well and add more if necessary. Please note that some oils can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Make sure to fully research the properties of the oil you want to use beforehand.
  • Instant Boost. Rub a couple of drops of essential oil in your hands and inhale the vapors. Be careful when choosing the oil as some oil can’t be directly applied to the skin and must be diluted in a carrier oil beforehand. It’s an inexpensive and quick way to enjoy relaxation with aromatherapy.
  • Massage Oil. You can make your own massage oil using carrier oil or base oil such as jojoba oil. Start with about 6 drops of essential oil per ounce and add more to taste, up to 15 drops per ounce. Give your partner a soothing massage… It’s a great way to enjoy relaxation with aromatherapy!
  • Room Spray. Fill a spray bottle with distilled water or spring water and add about 15 drops of essential oil. Shake well before spraying into the room. Be careful about spray it into objects and fabrics as some oils could permanently stain or bleach them.
  • Shampoos and Conditioners. You can make your own aromatherapy shampoo with an unscented or mild shampoo. Add approximately 10 drops of essential oil per ounce and add more to taste, up to 15 drops per ounce. Shake well before each use and use within 30 days.
  • Tissue Therapy. Dab a few drops of essential oil on a tissue and carry it with you. Alternatively, you can also place it in a drawer or under your pillow.
